Music That Inspires You

Monday, Monday, Monday! It’s the start of the Monday Blues. We’ll, let’s see if we can do something about that. Not that Blues are bad. . .I like Blues. . .

Saddle up, kiddies. We’re going commando today!

1. Steam Powered Giraffe

Steam Powered Giraffe is interesting. You have Steam Punk, Giraffes, Robots, and some interesting folks. This is a great cover, and one that I would label as “better than the original.” Plus, Spine dresses pretty frickin’ savvy.

2. A.K.A.C.O.D.

A.K.A.C.O.D. [Also known as Colley, Ortiz, and Dersch] is like Morphine 2.0. It’s truly a band of it’s own, and it’s definitely a helluva lineup. Dana Colley on the sax, Monique Ortiz on the 2-string bass, and Larry Dersch on the drums.

It oozes that awesome low rock sound like Morphine. Sure, it might sound like Morphine, just Mark being absent. . .but they’re their own sound. Maybe what Morphine could have dabbled in, who knows? What I do know is this: I love this group, almost as much as I do Morphine, and am definitely glad it was formed.

3. The Presidents of the United States

If you haven’t heard of The Presidents of the United States of America, then I don’t know where you’ve been. Especially, with Lump, or Peaches, or hell, Video Killed the Radio Star. A bunch of good guys with a good sound.

4. dUES

This song was dedicated to the late Mark Sandman of Morphine. The band, dUES, has a great sound, great lyrics, and overall, a great listening experience. I rather say this: go listen to their stuff.

5. Midge Ure

Midge gives a helluva cover here. I mean, it’s right up there with Bowie. Now, now. . .I like Nirvana’s cover just as much as anyone else. However, this one is right on par with almost being able to one up the man, Bowie. Of course, many can recant this thanks to Metal Gear Solid V, and its creator, Hideo Kojima. Now you can listen to a great track, read the comments on who heard it first, who listens to it while killing soldiers [or infiltrating bases, etc.] so on and so forth.

Either way, Midge gives us great vocals, great sound, and is a classy Scotsman.

That wraps it up for this edition of Music That Inspires You. Check back Wednesday for more! Until next time!
