Music That Inspires You

Covers! Covers! Covers! You want covers? Well, you are getting. . .COVERS! Even if you don’t want them. It’s Friday and I am pleased to give you all a double dose of covers. . .and shove them all up in your face [and make them grind too]. So kick back, relax, and let the music play!

Blue Oyster Cult – (Don’t Fear) The Reaper

Wolf – (Don’t Fear) The Reaper [Cover]

Everyone’s lovable favorite classic. . .OK, fine, it’s one of my favorites.

Cameo – Word Up

Gun – Word Up [Cover]

Note: Korn is probably thought of more when presented with this cover. So I felt it was suitable to throw down something else.

The Eagles – Hotel California

SkaDaddyZ – Hotel California [Cover]

Note: There are a few other covers, but I personally love this one. Also. . .[RBF] Reel Big Fish never covered this song. Stop it.

A-ha – Take On Me

Reel Big Fish – Take On Me [Cover]

Note: RBF actually did this cover. Carry on. I can also sing the shit out of this song, especially, whilst drinking.

Also. . .

Louis: “Chris, where have you been?”

Chris: “I don’t know!”

—Family Guy

The Animals – The House of the Rising Sun

Frijid Pink – The House of the Rising Sun [Cover]

Note: Yes, I know Five Finger Death Punch [5FDP] did a cover as well. Personal preference.

Iron Butterfly – In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida

Boney M. – In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida* [Cover]

*Listed correctly on the French release. . . Was also not sung by the original members.

Dschinghis Khan – Moskau

Black Messiah – Moskau [Cover]

Note: Yes, they both are in German, because that’s the way it was done. . .but since I am a gracious host, I have included this one.

Philip Bailey & Phil Collins – Easy Lover

Electric Six – Easy Lover [Cover]

Whether you want Phil, Philip, or Dick. . .Valentine. . .[ha!] Now you can have all three singing.

Depeche Mode – Enjoy the Silence

The Brains – Enjoy the Silence [Cover]

There are a lot of great covers of this classic. . .Lacuna Coil, Breaking Benjamin, Keane, etc. I thought I’d add this version though.

Toto – Africa

Chaos Divine – Africa [Cover]

*Bonus*

Tears for Fears – Shout

Disturbed – Shout 2000 [Cover]

Some covers are great. Some fall flat. . . Some should never have even been thought of. . .but that’s what makes it all a fantastic journey—experiencing all the greats, failures, and finding new things. It’s what clicks with you that makes it. I hope you all enjoyed this Cover Vs. Original edition of Music That Inspires You.

Check back next week for something. . .strange.

Music That Inspires You

It’s Hump Day, folks. That means, take the pants off and get to relaxing. No, it doesn’t? Well, too bad. . .

It’s time for another installment of Music That Inspires You!

CUE THE NOISE!

1. Queen

Queen. The Queen. I could say this should be self-explanatory, but there are some folks that just don’t comprehend the awesomeness that is Queen. . .or Freddie. You can’t just label a song, or an album, as a favorite.

Personally, this is my fave, but that’s for some obvious reasons [I’ll claim “hipster” status and say I loved this song before its use in the movie].

Speaking of which, if you haven’t done so (which would be sad if you haven’t) check out Freddie’s solo albums [Mr. Bad Guy, and Barcelona]. Great stuff.

Long live the Queen!

2. Asia

Ah, Asia. There’s not enough words to say how much win there is. . .but there is much win. You just can’t go wrong with them! In the early years, you have one part Yes, one part Emerson, Lake and Palmer (The Crazy World of Author Brown, Atomic Rooster), one part Buggles, and one part of the former Uriah Heep (Roxy Music, King Crimson, Family). Bam. Asia. In. Your. Face.

Heat of the Moment is probably one of the most renowned hits, and lately, because of Metal Gear Solid VOnly Time Will Tell has surged a bit [Thanks, Kojima].

Sole Survivor, The Smile Has Left Your Eyes, are just a tip of the iceberg for what Asia has for hits.

If you haven’t heard of them, well, go and do so.

3. Tears For Fears

An oldie but a goodie. You can’t go wrong with Tears for Fears. Everybody Wants to Rule the WorldShout, and many other fun, fine tunes.

Personally, I like Gary Jules’ cover of Mad World, while not many do, and vice versa. To each their own. Enjoy the music. Don’t squabble about it!

4. David Bowie

Question. Who [or alternatively, what] do you think of when you are asked about the movie Labyrinth. It’s David Bowie. . . or his package. It is right there in your face anyway.

Fun fact: Bowie used his own wardrobe for the movie. Awesome, right? I know.

You can’t go wrong with David. . .or the combination of David Bowie with Freddie Mercury [but that is another tale].

5. Journey

Journey is probably one of everyone’s favorites. Especially, if you remember the 80’s to be quite fond and good. . .and great. I know, I know, not many consider Journey, Journey without Steve Perry, but face it. . .it’s still Journey.

Although, I do prefer the Steve Perry era of Journey, I still give a listen to the other times. . .I just replace Arnel, Rolie, Augeri, with Steve. I appreciate the music, regardless of the singer. . .just Steve—WHY STEVE?!

That wraps it up for this edition of Music That Inspires You. Check back Friday for more! Until next time!
